The student committee of the Canadian Association of Professional Academic Librarians designed a survey to gather ideas for extracurricular activities that student chapter organizers and CAPAL can pursue to meaningfully engage students in the profession, spearheaded by Student Committee Vice-Chair, Natalie Colaiacovo. Students are often presented with a variety of different opportunities to gain professional experience and make connections with librarians currently working in the field. As a new association that thrives on the active engagement of its members, the CAPAL student committee would like to determine ways in which it can enhance opportunities for involvement, better facilitate connections, and identify areas for improvement.
From December 1st to December 16th, 2014, the CAPAL Student Committee received 27 responses to its survey – 16 responses from regular members, 10 responses from student members and 1 response from a retired member.
The survey was disseminated using Google Forms to both professional and student members of CAPAL. Emails promoting the survey were sent to the CAPAL listserv and promotions for the survey were placed in the CAPAL student newsletter.
The survey consisted of 12 questions. Different questions were presented to respondents depending on their membership status. The following report summarizes and presents key highlights from the survey results.
